Shaun The Sheep Movie (2015) Review

Shaun The SheepIt’s unlikely the target audience of the latest family friendly stop motion feature from Aardman will be as bothered by the grammar of the title as I am (not the “Shaun The Sheep Movie” or “Shaun The Sheep: The Movie”, just “Shaun The Sheep Movie”. Huh?) but if you’re looking for something to keep your little ones entertained then Shaun is the definite article.

When Shaun decides he wants a day off, he hatches a plan to put the farmer out of the way so he and his friends can relax. But when his plans go awry, landing the amnesiac farmer in hospital, it’s up to Shaun and his gang to save the day.

Essentially a silent movie, the animation and character design is as adorable as you’d expect with plenty of potty humour and slapstick for the little ones to chuckle at. Being Aardman, there’s also a few neat gags and knowing winks for the parents to enjoy, but its simple story and gentle pacing might struggle to keep the attention of older children. Although charming, it just doesn’t reach the wittiness and energy of “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit”, “The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!” or even the under-appreciated “Flushed Away”, but as a vehicle to deliver the TV favourites to the big screen, it does what it sets out to do.
